Between the Buried and Me - Prequel to the Sequel

When 2007’s Colors was released, I had avoided these guys for a great while because I was incredibly jaded by the tag ‘metalcore’ and pretty much all music associated with it after all of the awful cash grabs resulting from the popularity of bands like Avenged Sevenfold, but I could tell from all my forum browsing that there was a rather large group of people who hated the genre every bit as much as I did who thought the album was a masterpiece, so I bit.

Boy, am I glad I did.

BTBAM makes music they’ve (in jest) called ‘adult contemporary death metal’ and whether it’s a real genre or not, I find it pretty hard to argue. Their music can sometimes be soft and dreamy (Foam Born A: The Backtrack) as well as forceful and destructive (Foam Born B: The Decade of Statues), letting forth both fully contemplated and aggressively energetic melodies and rhythms. It’s just poppy enough to enjoy on the very first listen and experimental enough to keep you coming back for all those nuances that went over your head the first few times.

Download their magnum opus Colors here.

BTBAM= fantastic. This blog, by the way, is fucking quality. I suggest you follow it now. musicfortherestofus

musicfortherestofus asked: Neige sings in Alcest, Peste Noir, and Amesoeurs, so that'd explain it

That WOULD, yes. Thanks for posting that song, though, as I’d heard of the first two bands but somehow not the third. Really enjoying them.

Finally watching “Until The Light Takes Us” tonight, I think. I assume most of you guys have seen it, yes? Worth it?

Amesoeurs - Les Ruches Malades

Mellow, French, female-fronted post punk with a slightly metallic edge.

Sort of in the same lines as Alcest/Peste Noir, but not. I like it. *shrug*

So people have THEORIZED this is a response to Turisas’ “Hunting Pirates”. I don’t really see it/hear it myself (although I guess you could make the stretch that it sounds sort of like an homage to “One More”? It’s a big stretch.)

The new album “Back Through Time” should be out… today, followed by live Scottish keytar pirate metalling and all that this fall.
